Sometimes powerlifting training is about running full blast and smashing through the door to get inside….sometimes powerlifting training it is about slowly walking up to the door and merely turning the knob to get inside. Knowing when is the right time for each approach is a key component to your success, growth and improvement in this sport.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYnr7fBeYfk]

There is no doubt about it, powerlifting is a body-violent sport where explosiveness, speed, tightness, consistency and technique, technique, technique are staples to the world of successful training. Within the overarching scope of training time in the gym, sometimes the approach is very ballistic, but other times the training is more subtle and rote in nature. This side, the less visually intense side is often neglected by the newer and intermediate lifter, but truth be told, we all have neglected the subtle training days as they are not as viscerally fulfilling as the 100MPH sessions can be.

Having said that, viscerally fulfilling alone does not equal growth in the sport for any length of time. For the short term, absolutely, but for the duration (remember, greatness, as I have mentioned before is not about big numbers, but big numbers sustained over a long duration of time) there is a symmetry required between the explosive and intense with the nuancical and copious There has to be a balance and it is that balance that equates to a full powerlifter.

The symbiosis of the heavy day and the light/recovery day is part of the dynamic fabric that the best powerlifters are aware of and practice. You have seen it yourself, that lifter who is 110% all of the time, as well as the merely calculated lifter. Growth requires a balance of both as each supports the other. To put it musically, good powerlifting training is like that great piece of music where there is an intro (a hook) a verse a chorus a crescendo a bridge and a coda. If your music is just a crescendo well, that is just not going to take the song anywhere and if your training is just based on max-effort without the other elements, your lifting will soon stagnate unless injury gets to you first. Either way, game over.

The video embedded in this log is an illustration we want to share especially with the new to intermediate lifter as it features two training days juxtaposed with one another. On the heavy day, Steve, our featured athlete in this log takes his bench up to a 865LB 2-board press, aka smashing through the door to get inside. The second part of the video Steve works with weights as little as the 5LB dumbbells, thus, slowly walking up to the door and turning the knob to get inside.

One of the reasons Steve is such a successful powerlifter, WPC World Powerlifting Champion, 1,000LB squatter and has been powerlifting successfully since the early 1990’s with Ernie Frantz, is that Steve recognizes the need for symmetry in his training.

I hope this information is of use to you as it is something that can make all the difference with your training. There is no “secret” information in powerlifting, but there is such a thing as being an educated powerlifter and that is what these logs are really all about. Sharing with you what we have learned, over the last 27 years in this sport, is good information. In Dave Tate’s words, Live, Learn and Pass On.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
