Meana and her husband Seth joined Orlando Barbell on October 1st and she immediately told me that she’d like to have me coach her. Her original plan was to compete on December 15th, but upon finding out that meet was full she opted for the APF Gulf Coast Winter Bash on December 1st. We had limited time, but Meana is a trooper and did what she had to do.
Meana had told me that her main goal for this meet was to beat her PR total of 1011, so we planned for her second attempts to break it.
Here’s how her day went:
Squat warm ups-
135x5
225x3
275x2, well that was the plan. Meana walked it out and stood up with it but we knew it wasn’t right. Then Seth and I both realized that we had misloaded her with 2 extra 25 kg. red plates. Yep, that’s 100 extra lbs. No matter how many times I use kilo plates I’ll never be able to just look at the bar and know how much is on it (unless it’s in lbs). We called her warm ups there. Meana could have gotten pissed, but she handled it well. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a pissed off Canadian.
1st Attempt- 380 (a little less than her last warm up), easy, good lift
2nd Attempt- 413 for a 14 lb PR!
3rd- 424, I called her up right where I thought she got to with 413. She stood up strong but was red lighted for depth.
Here’s her 413:
Bench- 95, 135, 165, 185
1st Attempt- 220, good, easy
2nd Attempt- 242, good lift, but her back cramped and it looked like that was her max for the day so we called it and skipped her third.
Deadlifts-
135, 225, 275, 315
1st Attempt- 370, good, super easy
2nd Attempt- 385, miss. The bar got out in front of her and she stalled.
3rd Attempt- 385, miss. She looked gassed.
Meana had a great day and ended up with a 15 lb PR. Congrats again Meana!
Thanks to Rick and Tamara as well as all of the judges, spotters, loaders and help for putting on a great meet.
Our plan from here is to incorporate speed pulls after heavy squats and possibly some higher rep squats after heavy deadlifts. We also need to work on increasing her hamstring and lower back strength. Meana is very positive and great to work with. I look forward to continuing to.
