Our differences pale in comparison to our similarities. The time-wasting thrust and parry of debating RAW vs gear or federation X vs federation Y only serves to distract us from the goal, becoming STRONG(ER).

Seems over the past few weeks we have had an influx of powerlifters from other areas make at trek out to the MONSTER GARAGE GYM to get in a training session. These are lifters who train at different gyms, who come from different towns or different states, who lift in a multitude of federations, some who lift RAW, some single-ply and some multi-ply. That said, the thread that binds them all is they love being powerful and are striving to become strong(er) and strong(er) and strong(er).
This coaching log doesn’t feature any specific technique, training method or really any of the standard coaching lessons we put out to help your strength game, but there is a lesson nonetheless. In this case the lesson is that we are all powerlifters and there will always be more similarities than differences and those few individuals who seem to hone in on the difference are missing the boat, and it is a big powerful boat named The Brother and Sisterhood of Powerlifting.
As a powerlifter who just turned 50…..still can’t quite believe it myself, I simply don’t recall all of the nuanced bickering back in the late 80’s and 1990’s. Is it a social media thing? Probably, as social media takes away the ability for the numbers to speak for themselves and gives even the most negative of characters equal footing on the net as the most positive and knowledgeable powerlifters who actually have something to say.
So my point in this coaching log is about your finite amount of energy as a powerlifter. You have just so much time during the day and you can spend a precious portion of that time following some thread of negativity about a topic that narrowly segregates us as powerlifters (like gear vs RAW) or you can spend that precious time researching something of value that will actually catapult you forward in your lifting. Further, exposure to negative produces more negative (if you subscribe to the philosophical views of quantum physics and the ability to create your own forward trajectory through your positive thoughts turned into concrete actions as I do) whereas exposure to the positive results in the same.
Come evening time, make the time to unplug from the negative and as you put down the smart phone (such the ironic name as it is often used for the opposite purposes) and pick up an old fashioned book. Take the time to read Ed Coan’s The Man, The Myth, The Method….Ernie Frantz The Ten Commandments of Powerlifting...or Raising the Bar by Dave Tate. Why spend an hour reading some negative thing written by some negative soul while they were in their bathroom or parents basement, when you can spend that same amount of time on any or other of the aforementioned books. Because at the end of that hour, you will either have real and quality information from the likes of a Dave, or Ernie or Ed from a quality sourse of information created through a life-time of successful lifting, or you will have spent an hour on nothing but meaningless debates that only serve to weaken the powerlifting community written by powerlifters who will never make a positive deposit into the collective powerlifting bank account.
The accompanying video features members of the MGG as well as a number of guest lifters who came together on a given day not to feud or dissect but to work together to get the most out of a training session as each single training session absolutely and positively builds upon the next.
Wishing you all the best in your training and meet prep. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym.
