You have heard the saying, old soldiers never die, they just fade away? Well, old powerlifters never die either, they just get a new hip and keep on lifting.

Rick Roberts is a veteran powerlifters with 30+ meets under his lifting belt and some 30 years under the bar as well. Over the years Rick has enjoyed his share of powerlifting success winning a national title and placing 2nd at the AWPC Worlds. Even now as one of the “old guys” at the gym, Rick is the proud owner of a 738LB squat as a master lifter and life-time drug free athlete. Not a bad squat for an “old man.” Prior to Rick’s years as a powerlifter, he played college football and 5 years of semi-pro ball as well.

Now in his 50’s it is the time playing football that has caused him issues with his hip. Back around 2007 Rick was starting to hobble around and in 2011 he could hardly walk….yet and still, he took a 611LB squat that year in a meet, but the day to day hip issues were mounting.

After saying enough is enough, Rick went under the knife and had his hip replaced. He took some time off to heal properly and go through all of the rehab protocols (old guys listen to doctors, young guys don’t)….Tangent: younger guys need to take a tip from the older guys who are still lifting because old lifters often know what they are doing, that is why they are still lifting even as older guys). End tangent…..

So, after the doctors did their part, Rick did his job and made sure he rehabbed properly. Now healed up, Rick has put in three months, 12 full weeks of training so he could get a total at the APF Chicago Summer Bash. Not looking to set the world on fire, but to establish a new, post-hip bench mark, Rick competed and took a nice safe and easy 501LB squat along with a 336LB RAW bench and a very safe and conservative 462LB RAW deadlift.

The point of this coaching log is to illustrate that old powerlifters, even those with replaced hips like the GOAT, Ed Coan, the legend Steve Goggins and others can still be dangerous competitors on the platform. Now with the healing, rest and rehab behind him, as well as a meet to set a nice easy bench mark of new numbers, Rick is ready to continue to do what he loves to do, and that is to train, coach some of the young lifters and compete.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
