Reverse bands, lighten method, anti-gravity lifts, call it by whatever name you want. Regardless of the name you like, consider implementing this method into your squat and deadlift training.

This week, MGG’s under-200LB-crew trained in sweltering heat (air-conditioning, air-conditioning, we don’t need no stinkin air-conditioning). This particular squat and deadlift day was done with the incorporation of reverse bands. As Dave Tate would tell you, this method of utilizing bands, but as a way to lighten the weight at the bottom, vs increase the weight via accommodating resistance at the top, is not something new, but it might be new to you if you are lifting at a corporate gym, are new to the game or have just plain old never tried reverse bands before.

As with resistance bands from the floor used to make the weight heavier as the barbell nears lockout, there are differing bands to make that tension great, moderate or mild. Same goes for the reverse bands. On this particular day as you will see in the accompanying training video, EliteFTS light bands were used for the deadlift and EliteFTS monster-mini bands were used for the squat.

My personal experience with reverse bands, when pulling especially with average or heavy band, those bands can give so much pop off the floor that when locking out the deadlift the weight really feels, to me anyway, like a jolt and I find that puts the bicep tendon at an increased risk for injury (food for thought as you try these out) especially if you are a good puller who is very explosive from the floor. My suggestion is perhaps start with mini bands, monster-mini’s or light bands then go from there.

In the video the under-200LB bdw crew is pulling and squatting out of our EliteFTS 3x3 power rack and there are steel band pegs located at the top of the rack designed just for this exercise, and for the bands to be looped on. Having said that, does my team use the band pegs……um, no. Old dogs, new tricks….but I digress.

The point of this video and coaching log is really to show you how the under-200LB crew trained on this day and to suggest to you that if you are not utilizing the reverse bands/lighten method, it is worth considering as training with a weight greater than you can actually train with (without the reverse bands) has its obvious advantages for your overall training program goals with regard to overloading the weight, working on the lockout, physically holding more weight in your hands or on your back then you can truly do for either singles or reps, feeling that heavier weight when walking out the weight, etc.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
