If you’re hoping to become the next big Instagram fitness influencer, you might want to re-think your career options.

According to Fast Company, Instagram is testing the possible removal of the like count from the public eye. Rather than seeing the number of likes, users will see that their post was liked a few users “and others.”

Instagram explains the reasoning behind this change in an in-app message:

We want your followers to focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get. During this test, only the person who shared a post will see the total number of likes it gets.

This would impact influencers, who rely heavily on the number of likes. By hiding the number of likes from public view, people wouldn’t know how popular a post is, therefore lessening the power of influencers and what it is they’re promoting.

Such a change would affect more than the top influencers, but even people who are just trying to get their foot through the influencing door. Dropping the likes from view affects all influencers from every single area imaginable on Instagram: pets, furniture, fashion, and fitness... the list goes on and on.
