Hey everyone, I am pretty excited about this interview I just did with my good friend Mike Lawrence.
Mike is a powerlifter, coach and sports science researcher.
You know, a meathead.
I’ve known Mike for a long time and the great thing about him, is that he is wicked smaht, but doesn’t take himself too seriously.
To illustrate, his lifting team is called Team Awful, Bomb Squad.
They don’t bomb much though.
It’s refreshing to see someone that is intelligent and also a good lifter, but doesn’t think they know everything, rather, is constantly searching for new knowledge and ways to improve our sport.

He just co-authored a groundbreaking study on the Safety Squat bar and how it affects muscles involved in the squat, as well as movement.

We all know the Safety Squat bar is one of the best tools in our toolbox for Powerlifting for many reasons, including (some proved by this study!):

  • it allows you to work around injury
  • it takes stress off your shoulders
  • it  smokes your upper back, making it strong(er)
  • it is excellent as an added variation to your squat and deadlift training

The study PROVES some things we already knew about the bar just from using it, but also reveals new information.
It also dispels some common myths.

And yes, he did use the BEST Yoke bar made, the one from Elitefts.com in the study.

Part 2 coming next week.
