Yup.
I took a few to the mug a last weekend and it was pretty awesome.
Did I get in a fight?
Nope.
What happened.
I went to the Hardcore Olympics.
What the hell is the Hardcore Olympics you say?
I went to see two shows last week, on the same day in the same club, back to back.
The first was Death Before Dishonor and Agnostic Front.
The second, immediately after was Slapshot and Fear.
I didn’t know if I was going to make it through both because the second one was past my bedtime.
Anyway, DBD and Agnostic front played at a legendary rock club, the Middle East. The Middle East has two rooms, upstairs and downstairs.
The upstairs room is pretty small.
When I say small, I mean small. It’s about the size of the personal training room at TPS, maybe 2500 square feet.
Imagine seeing a show with Hardcore legends in a room that holds about 200 people?
It was mind blowing.
If you’ve never been to a hardcore show you need to go. The energy in the room is like nothing else, and it is always full of cool people. No attitudes, just a bunch of people who want to see some live music.
Oh, and there is the pit.
If you’ve been in a pit before you know what I mean. If you’ve never been in an Agnostic Front pit, you have not been in a pit.
Agnostic Front pits are chaos.
I chose not to get in the pit at any of these shows because I am not as young as I used to be and didn’t feel like getting banged around. The problem is that upstairs at the Middle East is so small the whole room is the pit, plus, Roger the lead singer demands that the pit gets outrageous.
Rules of the pit are pretty simple, and rules for the ring around the pit are simple and respected.
If you don’t want to participate in the shenanigans, simply stand on the perimeter and put your arms in front of you, people know the drill and avoid contact with you.
Well, as I said, it is so small this was virtually impossible. I was standing on the perimeter against a wall, and had a full Jameson and Ginger in one hand and my other arm extended to avoid contact.
This worked pretty good for about 45 seconds when a kid came flying by and punched me square in the face.
And then, his arm knocked the drink right out of my hand.
A buddy of mine looked at me and asked if it was my first show, I wanted to punch him in the face.
Rookie move on my part I know. Always put your drink down.
Over the course of the night I took at least 4 more blasts to my grill.
I hate to say this, but it felt pretty good to take a few shots to the face and not fall down, stutter backwards, or get knocked out.
At my age, I do everything I can to avoid any situation where I’ll get hit, but; knowing that I still have a chin was pretty awesome.
The moral of the story here?
It’s not to tell you I can take a shot to the face. I can.
Rather, it is to tell you to go and do something that excites you, that energizes you, that let’s you know you are alive.
So much now in our new society, people live in a fake internet world looking at other peoples lives on social media.
Watching other people's lives.
Not living.
Go out and live yours.
Do something that makes you feel alive.
Do something that gets you all jacked up, in a good way.
One of the things that does it for me it’s live music, almost always punk or hardcore.
You’ll find that if you do something that re-energizes you it will carry over to the rest of your life.
- To your training
- To your work
- To your relationships
- Go out and live.
And see Agnostic Front and Slapshot if you get the chance.
Also, this weekend, I have the honor of speaking at Spartan World Headquarters at Zach Evan-Esch’s Stronger Life seminar. I plan on getting video for that for next week’s log.
If you are in Boston, Google it, I think there are two or three spots left.
TeamTPS will be on the platform next weekend at the RPS Power Challenge.
We’ve got god knows how many people lifting and I’ll be handling my ass off all weekend.
I’ll post some highlights after the meet.
