It has been about one year since I have adopted the “If It Fits Your Macros” nutrition program. I know it seems like the trendy thing to do, but that’s not why I jumped on the bandwagon. My wife and I have had different journeys in losing weight and we both just wanted to get on the same program.

For a long time I followed an ultra low carb approach. She for a time was eating things like salmon, rice, and veggies. Meanwhile neither was going to be a lifelong solution. We always discussed being able to eat more like normal people, whatever that is, but we just weren’t really sure how to get there.

Now I know I am not a grilled chicken and white rice kind of guy. Jessica was certainly not a bacon, whole eggs, and steak girl. Well, she likes those, but going without carbs was not something that turned her on. So with the IIFYM craze, it just made sense.

Jessica is a great cook. She found a good variety of clean eating recipes that we both really enjoy. Once you figure out your macros, you simply plug them into any one of the many apps or sites out there to keep track of your daily intake. It’s that simple.

I think IIFYM gets a bad rap because so many people post pictures of their dirtier meals or snacks and posts them with the hashtag IIFYM. Yes, you can make some junk work, however, all junk would result in someone never hitting their appropriate macros. In addition, the junk takes up a lot of calories and really reduces what you get to eat for the rest of the day.

Anyway, this is a long way to go to say that instead of dieting, we have adopted a lifestyle. It’s much easier to follow than a more traditional diet and a lot more satisfying. Seriously, the other morning when we stopped to get coffee, we learned it was national donut day. On our other plans getting that free donut would not have been an option. With IIFYM all we had to do was plug in the macros and enjoy a guilt free donut. My choice was Butternut, and it was damn good.

OK, I have been enjoying what I eat a lot more over the past year, but what were the results. Last year this exact day, I was 251 lbs and today I am 235. I know some people will scoff at a 16 lb weight loss over the course of the year. However, for me, that’s just how I want to do it. I know I have mentioned it before, but it’s worth repeating, I once dropped well over 30 lbs on a three month strict diet. When the diet was all over, I gained every pound back and more. So, I am very happy dropping about a pound and a half a month and keeping it off.

I do not do bodyfat measurements as they are unimportant to me. I just want to lose weight and feel great. I find getting caught up in those measurements can be a psychological nightmare. So I just go by the mirror and my pants size. I feel like I see a really nice difference from last year’s pic to this year’s. Also, this time last year I was just barely squeezing into a size 38 waist on pants. Seriously, you would not have wanted to stand in front of the button on those pants. Now I’m comfortably a 36. That’s progress in my book.
