Everyday we teach and coach the basics in my gym.  It doesn't matter how long a person has trained with me, we continue to cue the proper techniques in the ALL the exercises.  While I'm not a strict form Nazi, and allow for individual variations, I maintain that there are  better ways to do things rather than doing stuff incorrectly.

I am amazed at what visiting athlete will bring to the table while training in my gym.

For instance today, we had TWO Olympic athletes from the OTC visiting that needed to do bench training.

We made space for them during a high traffic hour and let them get to it.  The moment I saw their bench set up with the feet up on the bench, I needed to intercede.

I wondered (out loud) WHAT THE HECK was being taught?  When the Olympic bronze medalist in Wrestling, told me that the Strength Coach just tells them to "bench" and gives a rep/set scheme but doesn't at least demonstrate a minimum amount of technique, I can only begin to question what is being taught across the country at other facilities.

This is the Olympic Training Center for goodness sakes.  We are suppose to be training with the latest technique and science available.  We have the best athletes and coaches?  FACE PALM!

Granted, there are some that may question my technique in coaching (and they can be wrong too) but I know that I am NOT the end all cure all.  (well sort of)

I go to the UGSS and keep my mouth shut and ears open to hear a thunderbolt or a dozen.  I apply to my own training first to see the validity of some new ideas.  If they work, I implement them with my people.

But FEET UP benching?

After teaching Bench Press 101 both athletes went on to PR their benches.  Now the bench doesn't make them a better wrestler.  No, no, no...it makes them a stronger bench pressing wrestler.  I told them so.  They can be added to the list of PR's by teaching simply technique.
