This coaching log features WPC World Powerlifting Champion Steve Brock on his heavy bench day for the week. In this session Steve works his way up to an 865LB 2-board press with his final five lifts as follows:

• 685LBS x 1 to a 2 board
• 735LBS x 1 to a 1 board
• 775LBS x 1 to a 1 board
• 825LBS x 1 to a 2 board
• 865LBS x 1 to a 2 board

Steve is 45 years old and currently competes in the 308LB class. Steve is back some 5 years into competitive powerlifting after a good many years out of the competition circuit. He competed in the WPC Worlds in 2014, the year the Monster Garage Gym qualified 9 members of the gym for the WPC Worlds. Steve won his WPC World Championship training with Ernie Frantz in the era of Ernie, Bill Nichols and Dawn Reshel.

• During this training cycle Steve has mainly been working on the technical aspects, specifically:
• Having his lats be the dominate muscle group to control the bar
• Pressing off his back and not engaging his shoulders
• Tricep, tricep and more tricep work.

Once this technical phase is complete Steve has it planned to battle with his next struggle and that is feet position and leg drive.

I mention these corrective bullet points as Steve is a 500LB+ RAW bencher and a 700LB+ shirted bencher, yet and still, there are always technical issues to tackle when you are pushing 101% max weight.

Steve has moved into a phase of his training where he trains two bench weeks RAW, followed by one bench week with shirted work. His RAW work can look like a variety of movements, but all are RAW. His shirted work can be with or without boards.  As he is a full meet lifter, he obviously concentrates on all three lifts as well.
