THIS WEEK'S Coaching Log: GREEN EGGS AND DEADZ

*NEW MGG COACHING LOG POSTED HERE EVERY WEEKEND!!!!

Deadlifting can be a smorgasbord instead of just a meal if you are willing to open up to something new. Here is what we mean by that...

Lots of self proclaimed experts out there in the land of the squat, bench and deadlift, but the one expert we are going to call on for the purpose of the lesson in this coaching log is none other than Dr. Seuss. Yes, you read that correctly. This is a man who has sold over 600 million copies as a writer and whose work has been translated into 20 languages. Not sure if that “trainer-with-a-clipboard” who has been lifting for 9 months has accomplished that…..but I digress.

If you are a master aged lifter such as myself, you know the genius of the good doctor, but for the younger lifter, Dr. Seuss wrote an ageless story, Green Eggs and Ham. This was a story written in 1960. The main character in this story is this guy named, “Sam-I-Am” (Sam-I-Am, now THAT is strength athlete’s name every bit as powerful sounding as Magnus Ver Magnusson). Now Sam-I-Am, like all strength athletes, is a uuuuuuge fan of a power breakfast consisting of in this case, eggs and ham, but specifically, green eggs. One can only presume that there is a greater protein content in the green eggs,...but again, I digress.

Anyway, Sam-I-Am is all about this power platter of green eggs and ham. So much so, that he keeps pushing another character in the story to try the green eggs and ham. The other character refuses to try the eggs, but as much as he refuses, Sam-I-Am persists and continues to pester the other character to try the green eggs and ham, much like vegans pester carnivores to try going meatless. However, unlike the vegans, Sam-I-Am is more persuasive and less nagging, thus, the other character does indeed try the green eggs and ham. In fact, the other character realized after eating the green eggs and ham, that after all the denial, he does in fact like, and very much so, the super protein filled, green eggs and ham.

Ok, so what is the point of this coaching log’s lesson….? Well first, never listen to a vegan. Ok, no, not that, well maybe. The real point being, trying new things, even things that you don’t think you will like may end up being things you truly come to value and that have value. In powerlifting, one of the big three lifts is the deadlift, and as the saying goes, nothing helps build a deadlift like doing a deadlift. I am a personal believer in that, but I also know that for some, as we are all different, not all powerlifters are naturally good pullers and some variety (for specific aspects of the pull, which is the topic for a future coaching log) in their deadlift training can make a difference and can equate to a bigger pull.

To this point, we captured some of our Saturday crew on a deadlift day and put together this footage as they were all training deadlift, but they were not all training it the same way. Some were pulling for reps, some were pulling for singles, others for sets of threes or fives. Some were pulling RAW, some were pulling in briefs, others in suits. Some were using chains and other were pulling off a block.

The bottom line is they were all deadlifting, albeit in a myriad of ways. In fact our powerlifting mentor, Dr. Seuss might summarize it this way…. “I like deadlifting...I would deadlift in a boat, I would deadlift with a goat. I would deadlift in the rain, and in the dark and on a train. I would deadlift in a car, and it a tree, deadlifts are so good so good you see! I will deadlift in a box, I will deadlift with a fox. I will deadlift in a house, and I will deadlift with a mouse, I will deadlift here and there and I will deadlift ANYWHERE….. Thank you Sam-I-Am!!!!”

Wishing you the best in your training and competitions. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM
