After competitively Powerlifting for over 20 years (my first meet was in 1995), I’ve switched my focus to Jiu Jitsu to improve my cardio and mobility which I’ve been neglecting for years. I’m hoping this will also improve my health and ability to function as I get older. I’ve been going to Gracie Barra Oviedo Jiu since June and although I’m far from good, it’s cool to consistently improve at something new.
Although Jiu Jitsu doesn’t compliment Powerlifting since it incorporates so much cardio, Powerlifting can definitely compliment Jiu Jitsu since strength and explosive power are very important.
In this video I’m going to show three of the exercises that I’ve found to be most applicable to Jiu Jitsu so far:
. Zercher Squats- to help with maintaining a standing position and takedowns. In this video I’m using shorter Spud Straps attached to our belt squat.
. DB Floor Press- Which place you in a similar position to pass your opponent’s guard (focusing on keeping your frames in (structures used to maintain space,) in this case the elbows.
. Rows- to strengthen grip, improve upper back strength, as well as to reinforce keeping your frames in
There will be more of this to come as I continue to improve my Jiu Jitsu practice while determining which exercises as well as which sets and reps are ideal.
