This past weekend my Special Olympic athlete, CJ Piantieri, competed in the area games in Jacksonville, Florida. Since this meet was just to qualify for the state games I had him stick with some relatively easy attempts. The spotters were also volunteers who were inexperienced at spotting, so I didn’t want CJ to lift anything that would potentially put him, or the spotters, at risk.

These events couldn’t be run without the volunteers, but they’re rarely familiar with running meets. Trinity ended up keeping track of the lifters attempts and judging, and I ended up spotting for the lifters who didn’t have coaches, or whose coaches weren’t comfortable spotting. The meet ended up going well and the lifters all had a good time.

I had CJ open with 225 on the squat, then go 235 on the 2nd (without knee wraps on either attempt since he sometimes has stability issues with them) bench 135, 155, and 165 and deadlift 275, 295 and 315 for a 715 total in the 66 kg/145 lb class.

Here’s video of his best lifts.
