Congratulations to my Special Olympic athlete, CJ Piantieri, for competing in the Southeast Powerlifting Meet in Marietta, Ga this past Saturday.

Here’s how his attempts went in the 145 lb class:

Squats-
1st- 97.5 kg/s 215 lbs- No Good due to a change of direction
2nd- 97.5 kg/s 215 lbs- Repeat, Good, 3 whites
3rd- 107.5 kgs/237 lbs, Good, 3 whites

Bench-
1st - 75 kgs/165.3 lbs, Good, 3 whites
3rd- 80 kgs/176.4 lbs, Good, 3 whites
3rd- 87.5 kgs/192.9 lbs, Good, 3 whites

Deadlift-
1st- 125 kgs/275.6 lbs, Good, 3 whites
2nd- 135 kgs/297.6 lbs, Good, 3 whites
3rd- 142.5 kgs/314.2 lbs, Good, 3 whites

The only lift CJ missed was his first squat attempt. He hit depth and started coming up when I called him, but must have questioned himself and then went back down and up again. Otherwise all of his attempts went perfectly. I picked a third attempt squat that was in-between what I had planned for his second and third. He probably had a little more in him on the squat, but the third bench and deadlift attempts seemed like the perfect amount. CJ is pretty much all or none, so at this point I have a pretty good eye for when he’s at his max. He, like myself and many of us, is getting older, so at this point I’m happy with him being able to maintain his strength and not get hurt.

I also got to see my buddy Robbie Dixon who I coached at the 2014 National Games. Although Robbie is almost entirely non-verbal, he hung out with me most of the day and we had some good “conversations.” I’ll post another update on how he did as well.
