So things have calmed down after the hurricane and the house is okay, but we did lose some of our fence. I had to use the downed part of the fence to repair the rest of it so it's back up and keeps the dog in, but isn't all that pretty. The clinic had some leak issues that we are trying to fix, but it looks like the damages may not meet our deductible so we will have to pay out of pocket unless we can get Hartford to help. We only lost power for about 20-21 hours and the kids were already telling me they were bored. We ended up sitting in the car with the AC going and charging our phones, back-up chargers and lap tops. It was a glorious hour of cold air. I also took a deload week from the gym since OBB went a week without power and there was a lot of other things I was having to handle so training wasn't at the top of my priority list.
I had planned on writing a long post that was a bit self deprecating, but I got on to a guy at the gym about talking bad about himself so I'd better not be a hypocrite. Since my wife has been gone I've come to realize just how much I depend on her. With us trying to sell the clinic there's been a lot of back and forth with the bank and lawyers and they use jargon that makes no sense to me so I end up having to relay messages to her in Africa to try and make sense of it. It makes me wish I'd paid much more attention when we were buying a house and the Vet clinic years ago. I'm not sure if I've ever felt more inept in my life.
The hurricane also left me realizing I was not the best at preparing for the long haul should we have gone without power for a few days. I had plenty of snacks and water for us, but batteries, canned food and non-perishables were a no go. The store was out of them, by the time I got there so I ended up with 6 cans of chunky soup and a couple of cans of fruit. I'll be starting early for next year and putting together a couple of containers of goods to store in the garage so we aren't scrambling next time around.
