Block 8, Wave 4 - Events at Colosseum

As soon as finals ended I had to get packed up and my girlfriend and I left town for various and sundry family Christmas functions.  First up is her parents' house for Christmas with her dad's extended family, next is an early Christmas with my family, followed by a trip to Florida for most of the week before Christmas visiting her dad, then back home to have Christmas with her family.  My plan is to do the best I can to keep to my training plan, but I know I'll have to shift and combine some of my days to make it all work.  As such, I did my main log work for my overhead day today during events since that will be the hardest part to do while traveling.

Oh, and also it just happened to sleet like a banshee overnight and into the morning hours with significant accumulations of ice on the roads that led to a huge 55 car pile up on I-95.  I'm not trying to advocate going to the gym to train in dangerous conditions.  I did not have to drive on any highways or interstates to get to the Colosseum and I drove slowly and safely in the icy conditions.  With the crappy winter weather though, there were many fewer people than normal training early on Saturday AM.

Tire Flip

12 flips x small tire (maybe ~300)

2x6 flips x big tire (maybe ~700)

10 flips x big tire

This was my first time flipping a tire since I injured my knee trying to flip an 1,187 pounder at the end of a series while competing at Brute back in August.  I was actually happy that I didn't have as much fear going into it as I did when I got back to heavy deadlifting after tearing my hamstring at a comp back in 2011.  Part of this is probably due to the longer time since the injury, and part of it is probably due to knowing exactly what I did to injure it and that it was my own fault for being out of position and knowing it rather than that I wasn't strong enough or some other nonsense.  I was slow on these (deliberately) and ended up muscling them a little bit because of this even though I was careful to maintain proper body positions throughout.  Overall, it went well and I am definitely going to be adding more tire flips back into training, especially since Iron Strong CrossFit has a good sized one to train with now.  Hopefully I can make it into an adjustable weight one like I did with me and Steve's old training tire back when we got started with strongman.
