Tonight I have wanted to do something that I have only done twice before in my 25 year career of powerlifting. That would be putting 1,000 pounds on the squat bar (in training). As most of you know that read my training log, this is a bucket list lift for me. I have honestly held 1,000 pounds in my hands on the bench press more than I have on the squat throughout the years. I needed some time over the past few years to build myself mentally and physically to where I felt comfortable putting this weight on my back. Time, injuries, surgeries, and confidence have been the main contributors as to why I have not until now.
It's funny I'm pushing 45 years old and I am finally feeling that I have the strength and confidence to partake in going after this goal. I have taken my time in the past few years after some majors surgeries and smart positioning for myself to take on this goal. I will admit tonight I was a little nervous in holding this weight. But I didn't want to just hold it, I wanted to successfully squat this weight. And yes it would be with a reverse band. But this also would be the first baby steps in taking this weight for real, straight up one day and several months from now. I feel I need to get in 2 or 3 good solid training cycles for this, with me being smart, taking care of my body and remembering that I don't need to rush this.
After hitting my 920 pound squat a few weeks ago in my meet, I knew I had just a little more in me. It's like anything in life, you have to put in the work and put in the time and finally after several years of waiting I am ready. So over the next few months I will be testing the waters and strategically testing myself as an old man to go after a long time goal of mine and to make it happen.
