Deadlift was my favorite lift for years…that was up until 2010 when I started missing what became the ever so elusive 700 pull. I believe I made 6 attempts at 700 in meets and missed every time. I don’t know if at some point along the way my mind just accepted that I wasn’t going to pull it, my nervous system didn’t want to do it, my form wasn’t tight enough or if I just wasn’t strong enough but I could never get it locked out. I still wanted it though….

Deadlifts came and I was feeling pretty good. I guess I should still have some energy since I had only taken 4 attempts up to this point. I got some snacks and hydrated a bit, rolled my back and had Lily roll my hamstrings and calves with a roller stick. At this point the bench had been moved and it was time to start warming up. I wore the Metal Ace squat suit over Metal M single ply short briefs. I’m pretty sure I was last in the flight by a pretty significant margin. The reason I say that is because I still had a couple more warm-ups when everyone else was ready to start the flight. The judges/director allowed me to finish my warm-ups before starting the flight and I greatly appreciated that.

I opened with 650 and it went decent but not as easily as I had expected. I jumped to 705 for my second and tried to prepare my mind to actually end this battle that I had lost so many times. Turns out today was the day and 705 moved better than 650. I don’t really know how I felt after pulling it. I was happy but it also felt like I didn’t know what to do. I passed on my third and was happy to have gotten some PR’s and was not injured. Overall it was a great day for me.
