I got to the gym late and ran out of time before I had to leave to make sure I was home to gather my daughter from the bus.
This last Saturday (October 28th) we held the APF/AAPF Southern States and a couple I've been helping in the gym were completing. Over the last couple of months I've offered technique, programming and exercise selection advice as they prepared for their meet. Doing this made me realize that right now I enjoy coaching more than I do training and reminded me how much I loved the LTT seminars we used to have. Kayla and Jon are great listeners and ask questions so they can learn. They react well to critique and make adjustments without arguing.
Kayla tweaked her back during the deload before the meet so she spent the down week resting and rehabbing and came into the meet at about 90%, but she still wanted to lift. She opened with a PR squat and got her second too, but then reaggravated her back on her third attempt. She went on to bench and got her opener, but her back limited her leg drive on her second and third and missed them both. She got her opening pull, but her second pull made things even worse so she missed it and passed on her third. Even with facing that she ended the day as best female lifter and PR's on all of her lifts.
Jon was able to come into the meet healthy and got a PR squat on his second attempt, but got a little forward on his third and missed. He got his opening bench, but I picked his second attempt too high and he wasn't able to grind it out. I'll take the blame there. He got all of his deadlift attempts and finished with a 606 pull for a PR. He ended up third in the 242 raw classic division.
They are awesome people and both showed a great deal of maturity in dealing with the day even though they only started powerlifting in August of last year. I'm honored they allowed me to help and coach them and very proud of them.
I'm now working with a couple of guys for the December 2nd APF meet in New Port Richie and can't wait to see how well they do.
