Why 6, I say "Why not." Seriously though, here are some pointers that have helped me stay less fat for the last 10 years over the holidays.

#1 DON'T EAT - I will admit, this one is difficult, but it can be very fun. When you are at a gathering, you don't have to eat. I have done this and have been given rations of sh!t by other people. On many occasions, I simply tell them "I am here for the company, that's what's most important." People usually accept that.

Another way to handle it is to ask people "Why are you so worried about what I eat? I don't judge you for shoving garbage in your pie hole, so don't judge me for making healthy choices." That irritates people. Plus just showing discipline in front of others can really be fun as well.

#2 EAT PROTEIN AND VEGGIES ONLY -  Most gatherings have some kind of protein served. Load up on that. There's usually raw veggies around, so you can snack on those as well. You might not love them, I don't, but they will keep your hands and mouth busy on something healthy instead of other crap. By the way, the broccoli casserole loaded crumbled Ritz crackers and processed cheese doesn't count as a vegetable.

#3 GUZZLE WATER - Chug down a liter or more of water before eating. Even if you do go off the rails, the water will fill you up and minimize the damage.

#4 GO FOR A WALK - Seriously, do you really want to be cornered by Aunt Edna making small talk? Go for a walk. Offer to take the pooch out. See if anyone wants to join you. It will feel great to get outside especially if you are anti-social like I am.

Exercise has also been shown to temporarily suppress hunger. In addition, you'll burn a few calories. Lastly, it's another opportunity to piss people off with your healthier lifestyle.

#5 WATCH YOUR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION - Alcohol has calories period! If you have a casual 5-6 beers throughout the day that's close to 1,000 calories. Not to mention it will lower your inhibitions and you'll be more likely to make bad choices. Hopefully, I'm referring to food and not your first cousin.

#6 BANK SOME CALORIES - I rarely find holiday food any good. It's difficult to cook for a lot of people. Sometimes the food will be overcooked. Other times it sits around getting cold as you rally everyone from different rooms to the dinner table. However, on the rare instances that you know you love the food, bank a bunch of calories the week before. Cut a good 500 a day to offset the damage from a holiday "feastival."

There you go. Good luck in staying less fat and Happy Holidays to you all.
