This Week’s Coaching Log:
The quote goes something like this…“Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant with the weak and wrong. Sometime in your life, you will have been all of these.”

As powerlifters, as powerful individuals it is always the right time to heed and live these words, and it is always the right time for those who have power to protect those who do not.

No doubt we sometimes see the powerful making fun of those who are weaker, or specifically in powerlifting, we see those with a little experience and a little road under their belt poking fun at those still trying to find their way. But we all know that those folks merely seem to have power and are actually revealing their own fears and lack of self confidence and esteem....but that is a story for another time.

In this world we all share, the power of helping isn’t always in vogue, isn't always seen as 'hard core,' but it is always relevant and right. You see it with Dave Tate’s hard work with Make A Wish, you see it in the Relentless meets, you see it in the powerlifting community that is comprised of amazing athletes who are relentlessly chasing their power goals and lifting up folks along the way.

This past week the lifters at MONSTER GARAGE GYM held a meet with the goal of accomplishing three things….First, to help raise a little cash for Underdog Rescue, second, to help find a forever home for a beautiful and but sadly neglected Pit Bull named Shilo, and third, to have a meet run by veteran powerlifters for novice lifters in an attempt to help them gain meet experience in the company of their novice peers….and to basically cause a little tiny ripple of positivity in the fabric of the universe.

Why these three things? First, Underdog Rescue. This is non-for profit organization whose mission is simply: “to build a kinder, more humane community through animal rescue, adoption and outreach. To help individuals and families find loving companions among pets rescued from abandonment, restored to health and evaluated in foster care; and to provide humane education, therapeutic and outreach services to children, senior citizens and the public.” Pretty basic, pretty simple, pretty phenomenal. Second, Shilo. Shilo is a Pit Bull that was basically abandoned, chained up in a barn stall and left alone with no real contact for months on end except to be given food and water. The goal was to expose folks, and you, to Shilo, via Underdog Rescue, as he is an awesome rescue dog needing a caring home. Who does that to a dog anyway? There is a special place for those bottom dwellers at the end of the day. Third, a meet for novice lifters. At Monster Garage Gym there are a boatload of master lifters, veterans with more meets under their belts than they can count. Having the old guard put on a professionally run meet for novice lifters is an ultimate good. Who knows, maybe the next Ed Coan or Ernie Frantz or Jim Cash will emerge from this novice group.

The point of this week’s coaching log is that in the midst of all the meet prep for the APF Equipped Nationals, aka Senior Nationals, those powerlifters and the other M.G.G. powerlifters training for meets hit the pause button to help out a truly wonderful organization, Underdog Rescue, help try to find a loving home for Shilo, basically to be a voice for the voiceless, and help expose some novice lifters to this sport we devote so much of our life’s energy toward, the great sport of powerlifting.

For those powerlifting keyboard cowards who focus on the negative, by all means, please continue to display your irrelevance. To those others who have actually been around for more than ‘a flash in the pan’ of a career, please continue to put your 110% all into your training and continue your work with Relentless, with Make A Wish and the like as it is arguably your duty as the powerful to lift up those who are not as powerful or fortunate.

Wishing all of our weekly coaching log readers the best in your training and competitions. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM
