Curtis and I are working with a young strength coach out of FDU. I was stoked when he came to me because, generally, strength coaches 'get it.'
Discipline. Focus. Attention to detail. Effort. Mostly all the things they're aiming to instill in their athlete -this kid's got it.
We started working together during the pandemic while he was training out of his garage. He told me, "I want to get bigger, stronger, improve my one rep maxes, and learn from you so I can pass it on to my athletes." Live, Learn, Pass On?
His best pull going before we started together was 495. Without much strain, he took 565 on a day he felt like shit. My comment to him - "Beautiful pull. Best it's looked. Really trusted yourself here."
His response - "That's a good way to describe the pull - trust. 15lb PR (he had hit 550 a few blocks back) and I wasn't even that excited bc I knew I should be doing that."
This kid has made some amazing progress in the past year because...
- He is FOCUSED and pays attention to detail for EVERY training session. He has bad days, but not 'off days.'
- Despite a hectic schedule, he makes it a point to RECOVER - focusing on his sleep, nutrition, and hydration. He doesn't make excuses, he gets it done.
- When we give him a cue to work on, he adapts his mindset and approach and TRUSTS the process.
