When I looked up synonyms for ”going through the motions” I found these words:

  • Careless
  • Disinterested
  • Inattentive
  • Lackadaisical
  • Negligent
  • Unconcerned
  • Uninterested
  • Makes one wonder why so many lifters just go through the motions with their training.

We know the excuses; tired, don't know what to do, bored, nobody told me, etc. It's easy to get caught up in it because so many people try to convince themselves they are more serious and committed than they really are.

It's simple to find all the education you need, but that takes more effort than browsing all the entertainment, so most don't.

The best people keep focus and realize the real progress is made, NOT from the last reps or PRs, but from doing ALL of it with intent, purpose, and focus.

How to do this?

Simple, don't just go through the motions. Treat every rep as it should be... A very small stepping stone forward.

This isn't saying you can't have fun (that's a must) or screw around, it's that your mind and focus must click in when the work begins. I've seen lifters f*^k off the entire session BUT when it was time to do their set, they were ready and 100% on. This is a learned skill but an important one, maybe the most important.

The difference between a serious lifter and a recreational one is the focus on ALL of it not SOME of it.
