Monster Garage Gym/Maroscher Coaching Log: (Log number XCVI). HIGHLIGHTS VS THE WORK

*NEW MGG COACHING LOG POSTED HERE EVERY WEEKEND!!!!

But that looks boring and I never see that stuff in the highlight clips…. So how is that going to get me strong???

There are so many amazing aspects to the sport of powerlifting. The intensity, the risk, the challenge and the sheer poundage, just to name a few. In fact, the highlight reels of both powerlifting training and powerlifting meets can be riveting to say the least. But what gets the lifter into a state of physical readiness that allows for them to perform in such a manner that is deserved of the highlight reel? I can assure you, the work (to some that is their least favorite four letter word) is far less riveting, far more arduous, and far less featured in social media feeds and the like. Big p.r.’s equals a big post and write up on FB or IG, etc, but a set of blase` skippy stuff for ten boring reps of sub-maximal work, not post worthy. Yet and still it is the rote natured repetition and the ever so under-rated chipping away at the stone work in the gym that gets the lifter prepped for the heavier stuff that lays ahead.

This accompanying coaching log video starts with a mini-highlight clip and then goes into plain old fashioned nose-to-the-grindstone sets and reps. If you are new to the game or an intermediate level lifter and you get your powerlifting videos from FB or IG feeds, you are seeing that “smash through the door, to get into the room” stuff that is a blast to watch and as much fun to carry out. Having said that, the training to get there is the equivalent of “turning the handle to get into the room” that allows the lifter to enter many, many rooms in their pursuit for the door they will ultimately smash down at the meet.

With a number of 1,000LB squatters and all-time record holders under our roof, we enjoy putting our fair share of exciting highlight stuff out there in hopes of inspiring and motivating other lifters, and the emails that come to us affirm that this is happening. To that point however, this video we are sharing should help illuminate and illustrate for you what, in part, helps create the strength to set all-time records, and put up big huge numbers.

We hope the mini-high light clip juxtaposed with our, working the basics, bench day clip will help you see the stark contrast between the two, especially if you do not personally have the luxury of training at a powerlifting only gym. Included in this session: paused reps, high stop reps, board press, pressing against bands, low reps, high reps, bamboo bar with kettle bells, etc.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
