Honesty is far better than sugar coated bullshit.
I use to train a fella who had one of the most incredible wine cellars of all time. We lived not too far from Napa/Sonoma county which is world renowned for some of Earth's best wines. Lodi and Paso Robles isn't too far from us to the south either.
Dan would come in on a Tuesday afternoon and hand me a bottle of wine to add to my own growing collection and I would ask him about the bottle to get some background on it.
One day Dan handed me a last of the lot "Viking" Cabernet. I questioned him when was a good time to open it?
Dan would laugh and tell me about what the wine "paired" well with.
Remember it's Tuesday, and I was working late and Pizza was the call for that evening. I told Dan this and he smiled and said "well, it pairs well with a good hearty steak, but it also pairs well with a pizza on a Tuesday night".
I never asked him what the cost of a bottle was, but I would ask if I should save it for a special occasion or not.
Dan had THE BEST answer to my query...he would tell me, "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion."
How true and honest my friend was (is). He never sugar coated his feelings and we always got along charmingly.
