Conditioning: as much as the participant can give time-wise.

No bike commuting today because of the cold temperature.  Yea, I know...I did live in a cold climate at one time.  That's why I moved.  I got out on my driveway this dark morning and it was 30 degrees.  NOPE!  Not happening today.  (I've turned into such a wuss)

I rode yesterday and froze my butt off all day and it was 38 degrees.  I didn't think eight more degrees off the thermometer was going to be so drastic.
