Went to another Hockey tournament weekend.  When I do this, I am off the grid and play a dual role in Coach/Dad to my son.  Nothing will detour me from my objective.

Hunter has been playing at the Bantam level for the  first time.  Anyone that knows youth hockey understands that this is the year of "do or die".  Why?  Because the kids are now allowed to check each other and for a lot of kids this is the first time they get introduced to "PAIN".

Hunter has been on the receiving end of many a check or hits, both good ones and "targeted" ones as he is still the smallest player on the ice.

Although he is 13 years old his body hasn't hit that famous "growth spurt" yet.

He made me chuckle the other night after a particularly rough hitting game in which he was SMASHED with a statement I've heard many times from other athletes both youth and at the doorstep of the Pro level..."Hey Coach, (or Dad in the instance)  I need some Growth Hormones and some "Juice".

I gave him my answer that is almost automatic at this point and told him about how his body is about to go into overdrive producing the most amount of testosterone he'll ever get naturally.

How the body will read it coming from an outside source right now and realize it doesn't need to produce that much on its own.

I also told him it usually is good for one increased level of play so if all of sudden he turns into Gordie Howe in Rodney Coleman's body he might make the "Midgets" in a years time.

I won't go into the detail of what I have told older players as it doesn't fit the script for now.  But know this, Hormone Replacement Therapy isn't all that awful for those that need it.

Most of all, my kid's heart is HUGE.  He knows the front of the sweater is more important than the words on the back of it.  But he also knows, that "Selkow" is synonymous with "you're going to have to kill me dead for me to quit".

His skating skill is phenomenal and his lower body strength is becoming "legendary".  Once he hits that magic age and his body goes from a 5'1" 86 pounder to 5'9" (or better maybe?) and at least my size of 205 pounds, he will combine the physicality of not taking anyone's shit, and his skill to an intriguing level of play.

By the way...His mom and I can wait.  It's tough watching your favorite player grow up, so we're in no hurry to make that happen.  But I certainly understand his frustrations.

Hunter will grow!  That's inevitable.

He'll be relentless, that's in his psyche.

He'll be GREAT at what ever he chooses because THAT is in his work ethic

And he'll always be his mom's and my favorite athlete, because that's in his DNA.
