Most of the tips I give in my 22 Tips to Open Your Own Small Business eBook are specific to technical issues such as finance, marketing, strategizing, technology and equipment.  While these are all essential, just as much so is the human aspect.

Something that you may have to just grin and bear is constructive criticism.  Over the last couple of years, I feel like I’ve had an excessive amount of people telling me how to run OBB.  From the music we play to the equipment we have, everyone seems to have a suggestion.

My advice is to take these suggestions with a grain of salt and:

  • Learn to listen without interrupting (along with programming beneficial routines, this is my main job as a personal trainer and husband).
  • Don’t take the suggestions personally.
  • Try to keep an open mind
  • Thank them for the suggestion

Although there are reasons why I’ve made the decisions I have and I joke with my understanding friends that I’m going to put a suggestion box over the trash can, there’s always a chance that someone may eventually provide a beneficial suggestion.  You’re much more likely to succeed as an attentive listener than someone who tends to argue with everyone.
