“So, should I use linear periodization, undulating periodization, nonlinear, the Bulgarian method, the abracadabra-presto-super-gains routine??? “How long have you been training?” “Six months.” "Then, PICK THE WEIGHT UP, PUT THE WEIGHT DOWN RIGHT WHERE YOU FOUND IT. Now, repeat."

I’m not quite sure when this happened, but sometime between my first meet in 1989 and today, training programs became as convoluted as a cellular plan, or figuring out the college FAFSA form. If I broke down the training program that I followed while training with Ernie Frantz at the legendary Frantz Gym you would not even believe me. Why? Because it was nearly perfect in its simplicity. Because more complex does not necessarily equate to better. I can’t recall who said about the early computers and the computer languages you needed to know in order to use them, but they summed it up by saying that it was like having to know all about plumbing just to flush a toilet. I think sometimes powerlifting programs, especially for the newbie to intermediate lifter can get like that.

The main thing for a newer to intermediate lifter to know is technique, because over a career of powerlifting I can pretty much guarantee you will change your training program time and again, but your technique, although you will always work toward perfecting it, will be steadfast if you are performing the lifts correctly.

There are some really great programs out there, but what is a great program for one, might not be for another. Just like sumo is good for some, but conventional is better for others.

This past weekend we squished some 50 competitive powerlifters in the 5K sqft MGG and between the two days what I can tell you is that not only do these lifters use different programs than one another, the ones that do the same program have variations in their programs that is just a little different than the variations in the other lifter’s program. Having said that, they all work on perfect form, working hard and getting enough of the right foods, sleep and recovery to make the best out of their training.

In this video of a few of our Sunday crew squad, there are lots of programs, and that is ok. If you are a little newer to the sport or even an intermediate, focus less on the program and concentrate more on working your tail off in the gym and honing in on the best form you can. At the beginning to intermediate level, virtually anything you do will equate to strength gains so get down the basics before jumping into the world of program this and program that.

If you take the development of powerlifting gear, squat suits, shirts, briefs, knee wraps as well as the new longer less whippy squat bars, and more giving deadlift bars, the numbers of the best RAW lifters back in the 1980’s is about the same as the top lifters today. If you go and look back at a deadlift program by John Kuc, or Lamar Gant or even Don Reinhoundt, you can see that simplicity was the ruler of the day….pick it up, put it down right back where you found it…..repeat.

Wishing you all the best in your training and meet prep. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym.
