There are numerous ways to pull with reverse bands. Reverse monster mini, reverse light or average bands. In this case we look at reverse strong bands for training the top end of your deadlift.

The short and very much over simplified rationale for reverse bands with the deadlift is to be able to train with more or greater weight then you could when pulling off the floor without the bands. As the bands are attached to the EliteFTS power rack from the top, that means that the barbell that is laying on the bands will be “lightened” by the amount of loft given to it from the bands. In this coaching log, Sean is using reverse strong bands. After setting up the bands, he laid an empty barbell onto the bands (thus the barbell hangs suspended in the air from the strong bands) and then began to load the bar with weight until the weight was no longer suspended from the band in the air. In this case, with these bands, it took 190LB of weight on the barbell to have the bar’s weight to lay onto the ground. So, Sean knows that at the top, when the bar is locked out and the bands are free of any benefit, that is the true weight of the bar, where is off the floor the weight starts off 190LBS lighter and as the bar comes off the ground, with each inch further off the ground, the reverse band tension gives less help to the lifter. So, 600LBS at the top of the lift where the bands are flaccid is in contrast to the 410LBS the bar weights when coming off of the platform.

So in essence, with the weight being pulled off of the floor being 410LBS not 600LBS, a sub-600LB puller can have training access to weight that is greater than what they can actually workout with (without the benefit of the reverse bands).

Something to be aware of with regard to reverse strong bands vs say monster mini bands, is the weight at the top, as there is so much less weight at the onset of the lift, will really create a jolt when the band are no longer assisting in the lift. Something to be aware of as you choose between the EliteFTS micro, mini, monster-mini, light, average and strong bands for your reverse band training.

Consider adding some type of reverse band work to your deadlift routine if you are looking to train the top end of your deadlift. *Make sure to add weight to the bar first to see the weight taken off by the bands so you know what your numbers are as you are going to want to log that information for future reason.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
