I was observing a young trainer the other day and witnessed the bliss of "Youthful Exuberance". The vitality, the energy, the commitment to change lives was contagious.
As the tempo of the gym increased, so too did the trainers voice in both volume and cadence. The music was turned up, and the pace was blistering.
As this new coach found her stride, I witnessed a phenomena, the more she wanted to tell her charges, the less they listened.
Still with the non stop pace of a Marine D.I. barking orders, I saw less and less adherence to what the LESSON was.
I contemplated the differences in style she and I have. I remember going home after a few hours of "instruction" and having no voice.
Over the years, the toll on my vocal chords have become such that I grumble a gravelly tone when I speak. Although I still master the OUTDOOR voice, my tendency is to soften my pitch so people LEAN IN to hear me. As they turn to face my words, I KNOW beyond the shadow of a doubt they are LISTENING and not just hearing.
I wanted to help the new person out, but I figured another important lesson, and that is NOT to offer recommendations without solicitation. No ask, no tell.
My life is made easier!
Until someone comes to ME with the request, there is no need for me to expend energy. Once they have engaged me, then speak softly and let them THINK of my big stick. (that sounded kind of dirty...hahahaha. Oh well, if the shoe fits, Cinderella) (hahahahahaha...shoes..ahahahahaha)
