It doesn’t matter what gym you are from, or if you are RAW, single-ply or multi-ply…if the respect is there and the work ethic is there, the brotherhood of powerlifters will unite around you.

The Short Story:
It was a fairly hot day (no air-conditioning at the MONSTER GARAGE GYM…as it should be) and the Saturday crew was warming up to train as it was their squat day. Shortly after the doors opened, a powerlifter from New York, visiting his brother in the Navy, here in Illinois, came to the MONSTER GARAGE GYM to get in a training session.
The Scenario:
The Saturday crew didn’t know a single thing about him our visitor, but what we did know was all the information we needed.
He is a serious powerlifter
He was getting ready for a meet
He was very respectful toward the gym and very respectful to the team
He was there to squat
The Result:
The bullet points were all we needed to know to put the positive energy of the MGG behind him during his meet prep session. This is what I call, the brotherhood of powerlifting.
The Bottom Line:
The brotherhood of powerlifting is all around us. When you go to a meet, a lifter is always there at the ready with their chalk if you forgot yours, is ready to help spot in the warm up room it you need one, will loan you their singlet if you lost yours if you are in different flights.
The Lesson:
There will always be differences; federations, equipment, etc, but if the respect is there, if the focus of one lifter is to help their fellow lifter and vice versa, then as a collective group we are there for one another. All that cheap talk on the internet by a few loud voices, touting their criticism about federations, depth, gear, form and the like never outweighs the true brotherhood of our sport. Having been in this game since 1989 I can tell you that the names and faces change all the time. Nobody remembers those with the loud voices, but true powerlifters always remember the quiet feats of strength. The essence of lifter helping lifter has always been there, and has always been a staple to our sport. As true powerlifters reading this know, the 'loud talkers' are loud because when you have nothing worth saying, you must be loud as nobody is listening. The true brotherhood is above federation and above the differences of powerlifters, as the differences are truly nuances at best. The true powerlifter understands and carries on the brotherhood of the sport.
As a week’s time has passed since the powerlifter from New York stopped in for a workout, we now know, as our world of powerlifting is a small sub-culture, that our guest for the day was Jake and he is training for the RPS NY State Powerlifting Championship, August 6-7 in Buffalo in the 275LB class. The accompanying video captures his squats for the day, as well as the brotherhood of powerlifting as the lifters from Monster Garage Gym do what all other true powerlifters do, and that is support their fellow powerlifter.
The MGG wishes Jake all the best at his upcoming meet. EVER ONWARD!!!!
