The purpose of this Coaching Log is to show you some squat training footage of IPF Masters World Powerlifting Champion, Dr. Rob Keyes.

Big Rob is a Master III lifter in the USAPL/IPF and this past year Rob won his division at the IPF World Powerlifting Championships. I remember doing a meet with Big Rob back in the mid-1990’s, and little did I know back then that he and I would end up together some 20 years later, training together at the Monster Garage Gym in Waukegan, IL.

Rob’s training is loosely based on a modified version of the Prilepin’s table. For the youngsters out there, Alexander Sergeyevitch Prilepin was the head coach of the Russian Olympic Weightlifting Team. Sometimes the old school is the best school. Just sayin……

Rob has been powerlifting for decades and it is safe to say his squat suit is older than most of the lifters reading this, but the point of this log is to show that for decades, Rob has been at the upper zenith of the pyramid of lifters in his division for three decades now. In other words, when Rob was in his 20’s he was winning, when he was in this 30’s he was winning and that is also the case for the 40’s and now in his mid-50’s.

Key to his success is his technique, and the methodical way he performs his squats, bench press, and deadlifts. No dropping of the deadlift at the top, and the bench is locked out at the top, held for a moment and only then is it then racked. As for the squat, it is always below parallel….because, for success in this game, practice like you compete and compete like you practiced.

The included training video *TRAINING FOOTAGE FILMED IN HD* shows that….yes….you can judge a squat from the front and yes, if you are not drawn into the latest and greatest “secrets,” because everyone selling anything has a “secret to success,” but rather stick to tried and true lifting principals, consistency, perfect form with every single rep of every single set, plain old hard, hard work and getting the proper rest and nutrition, you can stay away from injury and stay at the top of your division for years and years.

Keep in mind, it is not just big numbers that makes a great lifter, but those big numbers sustained over a long duration that makes a great lifter.

Wishing you the best in your training!!!!! Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher.
