This Week’s Coaching Log:
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country…... the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly….” - Thomas Paine *Excerpt from a work by philosopher, Thomas Paine, written around 1776.

During my 27 years as an educator in schools and my 29 years in competitive powerlifting, it has been my experience that there are not so much those big life altering choices that help to determine one’s path in life, but those hundreds of little decisions we make each and every day that put you either on path toward success or a road strewn with potholes and regrets. I have found this especially true in the weight room when it comes to training and meet preparation as well as how we look at powerlifting as a whole and for the journey that it is within regard to its totality.

I open with Thomas Paine as his times are within the framework of the American Revolution. And his words with regard to that massive history altering time can be shrunken down and applied to your times with regard to your powerlifting journey.

If you can, picture your lifting life as a timeline, be it 6 months in length or 30 years in duration. Rarely are there instances on that powerlifting timeline that definitively set a course for you onto a given path. The truth of the matter is, it is those seemingly innocuous days in the gym, those slowly, chipping away diligently, tirelessly and repetitively at the stone days that help set your course, that plot your path, that serve to point your direction toward your own personal achievement. Having said that, those seemly innocuous days in the gym, when slowly letting that extra rep slip away or letting off the gas and merely coasting through a set that points one down a lifting path towards a series of mere maintenance training sessions which translate to wasted workouts.

Your time as a powerlifter is infact a literal timeline as your powerlifting journey is a finite one with a beginning, a middle and an end. In each of those parts know that THESE ARE THE TIMES that make you or negate you. As a powerlifter you either invest in your training days and bask in the aftermath of a hard fought training session or look back over your shoulder at a half-hearted workout that can never be undone.

It can be human nature to look for that program, that pill, that secret technique or piece of equipment that will send soaring your training, that will release unbridled power and put you on the path toward the best version of you as a power athlete. But the reality is, the secret is, investing in each session, as each of these sessions ARE the times that can help you to achieve this.

I have included a lengthy video. A video far too long for the socialookatmedia fans, those short-attention-span-theater lifters to watch. But I include it for you as you have taken the time to read this far. In this video there is nothing special, no ah-ha training moment. Nothing is special in this training video because everything is special. Special in that a working powerlifting gym there is a flow of energy and moments can be grabbed onto as THE moments because it is the moments, the mundane that when seized and gathered over time not only create the right path but at the end of that path is the destination you have trained for and that is reaching the pinnacle of your own personal power and using that to achieve training, meet and personal victories along the way.

Whether you realize it or not, you ARE in the moment, THESE ARE THE TIMES!

Powerlifting is in essence a team sport as your partners are essential in the process, but at the end of the day, you stand alone. You stand alone either with a history of hard workouts that paved you a road to success, or you stand alone on a dusty path, built on the rubble of excuses. You see this every day at your gym, lifters that started a session with what were promising reps and sets, ended up with their precious time in the gym interrupted by long durations on a smart phones, conversations about the trivial or worse, petty discussions about others. These ARE the times, the times one is training in right now, regardless if the lifter recognizes this or not.

The point of this coaching log is to heed the words of those who can see perspective and take your training to a level you have never reached by not just realizing and understanding about the power of “These are the times,” but to act on it as well.  If you are waiting for that special time, that ah-ha event to make your training great and sent it into the stratosphere.  If you are searching for the times that you can look back at years from now and say, "Remember when?" Then realize, the times you are lifting in right now ARE those times, IF you make them so.

“These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country…... the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly….” - Thomas Paine
