THIS WEEK’S Monster Garage Gym/Maroscher Coaching Log: TRAIN LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO COMPETE

How you train in the gym is paramount to your success….or your failure at the meet. Warm-ups and the sets that lead up to your working sets require the same attention to detail as the working sets…..Here is why….

Every now and again lifters come along who make their max effort lifts look as effortless as their warm-up sets. There are few reasons for this, but the reason with regard to this Coaching Log, is that these lifters put an emphasis on their form throughout the duration of their training session. Meaning, from the empty bar, through the warm-ups, to the sets leading to the working sets as well as the working sets, their technique is flawless for each and every set.  In this Coaching Log, the lifter putting up the weight and making it look effortless is USAPL powerlifter, Cooper Wage.

To illustrate this to you, the newer to intermediate powerlifter, we are going to take a peek into a training session of USAPL lifter Cooper Wage. In this training session, Cooper goes from the empty bar to a couple sets with 995LBS.

In the accompanying video, Cooper is filmed squatting 605LBS, 715LBS, 805LBS, 895LBS, then his two top sets of 995LBS for each of those final two sets. The point we are trying to illustrate is that as the squats grow in weight, all lifters can be seen feeling the additional pounds, but keeping the form and technique tight during the lighter weights equates to a smoother transition to the bigger weights. Will a lifter show the strain as the weight gets heavier...you know they will, but the more the lifter hones their ability to focus on their technique on all sets, not just the bigger sets, the better prepared they are for the brunt of the bigger weights when they get to those sets.

Said another way, a common mistake for the newer to intermediate powerlifter is to “phone in” the lighter sets, then start to focus when the weight gets heavy. In reality, the more focused the lifter is from the start, the better prepared they are for the assault that is the heavy weight.

The accompanying video is a great illustration of one of the best young squatters on the scene today, Cooper Wage, demonstrating a focus on the detail that is technique from his warm-ups to the big 995LB sets.  Take a moment and note how from the un-rack, to the steps back, to the pause after he locks the weight out, to the re-rack, the warm-up sets all the way to the big sets are virtually replicas of each other.  This attention to the details of the squat are perfect examples of how one should train throughout the duration of assenting squats in a training session.

If you are not as tight and focused during your submaximal sets, pay close attention during this video and consider training your lighter weights like your heavier weights, because how you train in the gym will translate to how you compete at the meet, and that will either be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on how your gym training unfurls.  As with all things in powerlifting, the Devil is in the details.

Wishing you the best in your training and competitions. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM198732_544252228887_187601083_31164307_6456682_n987987-477x720MGG
