It’s been a great week for powerlifting on Instagram. You know why? With the IPF Worlds this past weekend, we are seeing tons of squat videos from coaches and lifters who have taken the time to teach and master the  walkout or set up.

What many treat as an afterthought is one of, if not, the biggest factor in the squat. Even with a monolift, if you mess up the pick, your odds of screwing up the lift are extremely high (if not almost guaranteed).

Setting up for the squat efficiently with no wasted effort will not hurt the outcome in any way- it can only help it tremendously! Yet, day after day,  we see the same people taking far too many steps with all types of extra body movement going on. If only lifters made this mistake, I would I understand. But if they are being coached, there is no excuse for it.

Watch many of the walkouts from the IPF videos. These lifters are among some of the best in the world.

This is called a clue!

They may not have the followers of others - but they know what the fuck they are doing.
Trust me, I’m not a fan of the IPF at all but this isn’t about them so let’s not go there.

It’s about making coaches and lifters aware that the set up matters.

It’s also a good way for those looking for coaches to know who not to work with. If their clients' walkouts always suck, month after month, then move on to someone else. This should be the first thing to look at and the easiest to see.

Please, I don’t want to hear about the outliers. They are the exception, not the rule. Also, this applies to the pick out of the monolift if your federation allows it. That needs to be practiced with proficiency as well.

The take away. Even if your coach doesn’t care, it’s still on you, the lifter, to do the work here. It matters more than you know!
