SCENARIO: You train for and go to a Powerlifting meet. At the meet, you hit all your lifts and feel you could have hit 50 pounds more on the Squat, 30 more on the Bench Press, and 50 more on the Deadlift. Everyone who was there agrees with you. All lifts were PR’s and you are an Intermediate to Advanced Lifter.

You left 130 pounds on the platform!

QUESTION: What do you do when setting up your training for the next meet?

If you're a coach what do you do for this athlete?

My Answer.
This lifter had a great meet. Training was great. I would not adjust percents based on new maxes at all. I’d do the same weights again on the main lifts and push the accessories more.

Then go to the next meet and get the lifts that may have been left on the platform. This will mean the training will be easier to recover from (vs increasing the weights) leading the lifter to go into the next meet less banged up and more confident.

The biggest mistake I see are intensities (percents) going up when, in many cases, they should go down. This leads to big gym lifts and shit meet lifts.
