After some thought, I decided to make establishing credibility in your field as my number one tip.  This may very well be the most important aspect of opening your own business.  No one is going to invest in your business or join your establishment if you haven’t obtained enough experience and credibility.  I had established credibility as a personal trainer, as a competitive powerlifter, and even as a meet director since I had begun hosting powerlifting meets.  You essentially need to “pay your dues” to show that you’re worth the investment and are invested in your mission.

Whether it’s a gym, a restaurant, an auto repair store, or any business, you need to have experience, certifications, and a track record of success.  Having a degree may not be necessary, but it shows that you have the capacity to learn, the determination and work ethic to sit through at least four years of school, and that your critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills have been put to the test
