My son is playing at the "Bantam" level this year in hockey. Although he practiced with his former team's bantam team (I knew the coach and he allowed Hunter to play and learn) this is his first real year of hitting (checking) and the sorts.
For many this is the year that changes everything due in part to the collisions that were formerly contacts. Kids find out that it hurts when you take a good hit.
I've always liked and actually thrived on the contact. There's something about smashing into another kid that is fun and exciting.
I have also always liked taking on "bigger" guys. WHAT? That doesn't sound right. What's wrong with me? Is there a couple puzzle pieces missing???
Nah.
As I told my undersized son, two things happen.
1. If the bigger guy beats you...no problem. He's kind of a bully for doing that.
and
2. You beat him, YOU get a reputation for being:
a. tough
b. Infuckingsane!
Which I think is a win-win.
Don't get me wrong, both my son and I have taken some incredible pummelings but....SO? It only hurts for a few minutes and you get use to it. But how much stronger and tougher have we become?
Now that's immeasurable. A true character builder.
You have to embrace the suck and just thrive on the rearranged DNA of the opponent. That's why if I don't know your name and lay a pasting on ya, I call you "DAN".
Look at all the challenges that life has to offer and choose the big scary ones.
More rewards when you whoop the big ones.
