Records are made to be broken, and when you break all of them in your class, that is a fairly rare accomplishment. But sometimes just getting to and through the meet is the real achievement….Here is what we mean….
When the chalk dust had settled and all the numbers were in, M.G.G.’s, Mz. Dawn looked back at a day one at the AAPF RAW Nationals that produced for her, 4 AWPC World, 3 AAPF National, 3 AAPF IL State records, Best Lifter honors, and a ticket to the upcoming 2017 AWPC RAW World Powerlifting Championships.

Not a bad thing to see when looking back at the day, but even sweeter were the unknown nuances behind those numbers.
This year, specifically, the last 10 months have been very, very challenging. As the saying goes, “Everybody is fighting a battle that nobody knows about.” In this case, Dawn and I were focused on my mom, Dawn’s mother-in-law, who had to be flown out of state for emergency surgery back in August. This resulted in 6 major, life-altering/saving surgeries, 7 months in 4 different hospitals, and enough ups and downs and ups again to fill a book. The short version is, 100% of our attention went toward my mom and training took a back seat.
I will fill you in on the details eventually….maybe…..we’ll see….but for the point of this Coaching Log, I will share this….In talking with Dave Tate, who has been through this himself, he advised me of many things. I will share some of them with you in an upcoming article, and some I will keep just for me. But the one I will share today is that during times of great stress and strife you must stay active in the gym in order to make the best, and in some cases, life impacting decisions for your loved ones. So although you can’t go as heavy or as intense due to the emotional stress and toll, picking up weight is a must do.
As life-long-lifters, we are wired, so-to-speak, to be in the weight room, and those who aren’t quite wired this way, well, they won’t understand this. But as you are reading this, you know of what I speak. So to have loved ones fighting for their lives and compound that with a time out of the weight room where you re-charge your life energy, so you can better serve them, only adds insult to emotional injury. In other words, that precious bit of free time you might have is well spent working out as that is an investment in keeping your body and your mind strong, so you can be there for your family to the best of your ability. It might not be “training,” but at times like this, “working out” can be your physical and mental life-raft.
This is advice from Dave that Dawn and I took and applied for the next 8 or so months of our lives as my mom was moved from hospital to hospital.
Going back in time a bit further, prior to my mom’s emergency, we made a decision for Dawn to compete at the Nationals this year as the Worlds would be local being that it was to be hosted in the US this year. In 2010, Dawn won the AWPC RAW Bench Press Worlds and won Best Lifter. The goal is to try and replicate that but in a full meet.
So throughout her entire meet prep there were gaps and pauses and set-backs as our focus was on the big picture, and that was and is my mom’s health. Through it all, Dawn trained as best as she could and through her indomitable spirit and deep faith, she went to the meet and ended up hitting her oh-so-elusive 210.5LB RAW bench press at 146.6 LBS of bdw at 49 years of age, in a full meet. This is a number that she has been chasing for a good chunk of time now, years in fact. So the records, the win and Best Lifter award were icing on the cake, as the 210.5LBS had the greater satisfaction. That said, the real reward was being able to do the meet at all, and best of all, my mom (who is now finally back home) was able to watch Dawn compete via live-stream, and that was absolutely amazing and far exceeds how any record, win, or total can make one feel.
With the meet running Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this past weekend, this log is running late and I will devote the next log to the training program that Dawn utilized via our RAW Squad programmer, Ron Legarreta (Military Nationals Champion and USAPL National competitor) in prep for the RAW Nationals.
But for now, the point of this Coaching Log, (a more indepth article on this topic will follow), is that everyone is facing a challenge that you might not know about and it is at times like these when there is a greater satisfaction and a deeper meaning behind the numbers and the meet itself, than meets the eye.
Stay tuned for the next Coaching Log that will feature the program that Dawn followed for this meet. Until then…..
Wishing you the best in your training and competitions. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM
