In this third installment, Martin and I talk about the evolution of metabolic training. Gone are the days of endless sprints and road work. It was his experiences and testing with conditioning that evolved into hurricane training.

We discussed all levels of the hurricane training system and its origin.

As we continued, the question of the importance of endurance training for fighters was brought up.

How important is endurance?

Is more high intensity metabolic work better or worse? The answer might surprise you.

It is a balance; a balance of training and recovery.

The weekly schedule of MMA fighters dictates everything. If a fighter is doing two skill work sessions a day, how intense can his conditioning be that day or even the next day? How fast do they recover?  It depends upon their current level of conditioning, how good their nutrition is, how much rest they get each night, and so on…

This is the flow of weekly training for the fighters. As there is a flow with training, there is also a flow with a fight. Martin shares his experiences of walking out to the octagon.

The job of a strength coach warming the fighter up before a big fight and what it’s like to walk out to the octagon in front of thousands of fans.
