In another installment of NBS Whiteboard Talk published this month, David Allen discusses deloads. Allen addresses the major concerns of deloading and answers common questions such as, "when should I deload?" and "should I have pre-programmed deloads?"

The primary thing to remember about deloads, according to Allen, is that everything in weight training is about stress. He uses an analogy of digging a hole: Every time you add stress to your life, you dig a deeper hole. When you add recovery, you are filling the whole back up. As stress digs a deeper hole, it is sometimes necessary to use a deload to refill the hole.

There are four different ways to deload, each of which Allen discusses in the video:

  1. Lower Intensity
  2. Lower Volume
  3. Lower Frequency
  4. Time Off
