I'm currently training for USS "Hope for the Holidays" strongman competition that'll be in St. Louis on December 19th. I'll be competing in the max log clean & press and max deadlift events. I'm also still focusing on adding some size, but strength is my main emphasis. I'm working with teammate Mike Mastell on my programming. After competing in December my next competition plans will more than likely be USS Nationals or NAS Plat+ next summer.

For those that don't know I'm an avid deer hunter. I'm a trophy hunter, but I also eat a lot of venison. It's easy to harvest a doe, but a trophy buck isn't always an easy task. I bow hunt and I also hunt with a rifle during rifle season. I've bow hunted quite a lot this fall without and luck harvesting a trophy buck.

Opening morning of rifle season I was up at 4:00am and leaving the house by 4:30am. I parked my truck and walked around 3/4 of a mile to my chosen hunting spot for that morning. I saw the sun come up and watched deer most of the morning. I did see a really nice buck about 250 yards away, but let him walk because I couldn't get a shot I was comfortable with taking. He was walking just fast enough that I wasn't going to risk a poor shot. I sat until about 9:45 that morning and then went home to eat before heading to the gym to train.

I had a good training session and as soon as it was over I was heading back to the deer blind. I got settled in and soon started see deer movement. I saw a nice buck walk out at about 250 yards away from the same area I had that morning. Since he was behind me I had to kneel down turn around and reposition myself very quietly in the blind. I got him in my scope and he was a nice buck, but he was still young and had room to grow. About that time I noticed a really nice buck walking out of the woods to my right about 60 yards away. I needed to be turned around and in completely different position to get a shot on him.

I slowly started moving while kneeling and about that time both of hamstring cramped and they cramped hard. I wanted to make some noise, but instead I had to slowly stand straight up (while bending forward at the waist because the low ceiling of the blind). This eased them up a bit, but I knew if I let them bend at all they'd start to cramp. I turned around and sat back on the edge of my chair. Both were still trying to cramp on me, so I set my crosshairs and squeeze the trigger. He dropped in this tracks and immediately ran out of the blind to get my legs straight again.

I ended this hunt with some meat for the freezer and a new trophy for my home gym. I've still got a few more does to go before the freezer is completely full though.
