For those that don't know, I run a small powerlifting group at a CrossFit box in NYC a few days per week. This past weekend, I coached three of them at the RPS Heatwave meet in Long Island.
The lifters, Zack, Ilana and Rebecca are all new to the sport (Rebecca had done one unsanctioned prior to this one), and I'm proud to say they all had great showings.
Ilana and Rebecca lifted on Saturday, and both went 7/9. Rebecca hit an impressive 600@123 total (raw, no wraps), beating her unofficial mark by 15 lbs. Ilana, who struggles with her squat technique made me particularly proud by going 3/3 in the lift.
Zack, had an awesome first meet, having a perfect 9/9 day, matching his gym press on the squat and bench, then pulling a pr 525 on his last deadlift.
When I first started working at a CF box, I caught all kinds of crap from some of my powerlifting buddies, but the experience has been better than I ever could have hopped. I've now introduced 7 new lifters to the sport in my time there, with a few more looking towards their first meets.
Awesome job guys!
Not sure. I will most likely be at the RPS meet in Newark in November, either lifting or coaching (maybe both) but we haven't made a call regarding the Long Island meet yet.
