I got an ego check from a friend the other day. One of the things on my bucket list is to compete in a salsa competition. I finally took the time to go to this one place he recommended to take the steps towards that goal. As I started to connect with the instructors at the studio and shared that this was a goal of mine, they were excited to offer that they not only teach competitors of all levels but they would provide a partner. One of my biggest concerns.
Two weeks in and I was still learning steps that I can do with 4 inch heels and with my eyes closed. Ok, maybe not the triple spins. But the basics, I was over it and ready to dive in something a little more challenging.
I shared this with my friend and he looked at me and said, "master the basics." Ego check. He was right. I wanted to get to step 4 before experiencing steps 1,2 and 3.
This could apply to anything really. We want answers now. We want to fast forward to the final step. The challenge is experiencing the experience fully and check your ego from time to time. And most importantly, practice patience.
Patience is the challenge for me right now and I need to dance with it (pun intended) and get to know it a little bit more. Embrace step 1. Step 2. Then step 3 and so forth. If I need to go back to step 1, take that patience and experience with me. Stay humble.
