Chris, owner of Jungle Boy's Training, is a good dude. I first met him at the compound. I don't remember which seminar, but we got to talk briefly and he gave me a badass hoodie from his gym. I told him I walk my dogs in it everyday.
He later reached out on IG and asked if Yessie and I if we would do a seminar at his place. Yessie and I love to travel. We like getting away together and trying to unplug a bit. So hell yes, I said we're in.
It was a nice drive, but a dark one. We left later than we wanted to (my fault). We got in to historic Fredericksburg and checked into our airBNB. Nice lady. Talkative lady. Besides running out of toilet paper, it was an uneventful stay.
Saturday morning we got up early and headed to breakfast. Mason-Dixon cafe was pretty incredible for breakfast. Eggs, toast, potatoes and french toast. I don't know what Yessie ate but she stole some of my french toast. We got to the gym (less than five minutes away) on time (thanks Yessie). And shot the shit with Chris for a few minutes.
The first 30 minutes of our seminars we like to break the ice and try to get to know the whole group. One of the members, Mark, has been my client for almost two years. So it was easy for me to bust his balls and let everyone know that we're here to learn and have fun. This isn't serious business. We're lifting weights and trying to be better human beings.
We quickly learned these cats were fun. GHP is a nut (don't worry about his real name). I don't think I'll forget him anytime soon. Mark, his brother, and Bryton are smart guys that will hit some big numbers in the future if they keep their heads on straight. The ladies were flat out awesome. Some really strong girls and some beginners- really it's a great mix. And they were all eager to learn.
Yessie and I are so thankful that we have these opportunities. It's such an honor to have people think enough of you to spend 6+ hours with you on a weekend.
Some highlights-
Mark (my client)- hit a smooth 555 squat, then we added some reverse bands for a 605 grinder. His best competition squat is 575 so I think we're on the right track even without a peak phase to his programming.
Bryton- He went for a bench PR and failed, but it was an eye opener when I called him out on why he would fail. He touches too low and really struggles through the transition because he doesn't have any leverage.
GHP- 525 PR pull!
The ladies kept it light all day- I got the impression they didn't want to show up the men. I think I was most impressed with their deadlifts. Some of them were pretty damn good to start with. But they were all lacking a little bit of patience and tightness. We practiced a combination of isos and eccentrics through different ROM to get everyone to feel it in some form or fashion. And by the time we were done they looked on point. Their challenge will come in practicing it regularly under load.
