If you were the recipient of someone who said to you, “You have a lot of potential” how would you react?
Do you embrace it? Do you take it with stride and follow through with the possible potential you have and prove to that person they were right?
Or are you one of those people who run the other way because “You are afraid of Success”? or are you “Afraid of Failure”?
There are a few different meanings of POTENTIAL:
Capable of being but not yet in existence, The inherent ability or capacity for growth, development, or coming into being.
Having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future.
Potential, from the Latin potentia "power," sounds more complicated than it is. It describes something or someone that has the power to become something.
Whether potential relates to your job, your family, your sports, your lifting or just life in general, how we react to potential will determine the kind of person you become.
Now let’s get to the purpose of my blog today.
I am fortunate in life to be in a position to identify potential in people through my Kettlebell instruction and our home gym Powerlifting Team. By that I mean I can watch someone lift whether it’s bells or bars and identify whether or not they have the “Potential” to become really good, competitive, or even a world champion. This comes from me being able to identify weaknesses, pick out peoples strengths and see how they adapt to technique changes. It also comes from not only the person’s athletic ability but also their mental mindset. If you are coaching someone who is a really good lifter with lots of potential but their mindset is totally opposite then you have your work cut out for you as a coach or a friend.
Most times in life things can be corrected with the proper mindset but I’ll be damn certain, if you think you “Can’t” then you “Won’t”. Period.
Have you ever heard someone say to you “I am afraid of success”? Well, me either, until recently. Those words got me thinking, and talking with others about what exactly that statement meant
I think that fear of success could be a feeling of anxiety concerning the outcome of something or the safety and well-being of yourself. So many ways things can be interpreted but the important thing to remember is you are in control of YOU. Nobody else can help you if you can’t get past that initial “Fear” whether it’s a fear of failure, success or injury. I truly believe the body does what the mind tells it too, mind over matter. Don’t ever let fear stand in your way because before you know it all those opportunities and potential will pass you by.
Spouses, friends, family they are suppose too tell you have potential, encourage you to be better than you were yesterday, that’s what we do as friends and family. Recently I was told by someone “Sheri, you have a lot of potential”. Those words really hit home to me. Don’t get me wrong, my husband has always told me that. Ken has always encouraged me and made me feel like I had potential. When a new person enters your life and identifies that you have potential you should embrace it. Take that compliment and show them they were right and use that potential to do something great. It feels absolutely fantastic and to miss out on an opportunity like that would be quite shameful actually.
So what kind of person are you? A run the other way kinda person or run straight into the fire kinda person?
