I am here to live, learn, and pass on.
I've been a little hard headed about training lately just because it has been going pretty well and want to keep pushing myself more and more.
I planned to take it easy and "deload" this week but when I heard I was doing sumo deadlifts, my mind automatically thought "let's go heavy" because it has been a while since I've done sumo deadlifts and wanted to see where I was. Although, my back and hips have been feeling "off" lately, I chose to completely ignore that. Not that it was a horrible day, considering I've never done 315 lbs with that much volume, technique wise, it just didn't feel good and the end resulted in tighter hips and a tighter back. So now that my head is leveled again and, of course, to avoid future injures, it's best that I listen to my body and take the rest of the week easy.
I often get the question which one is better: sumo or conventional? The answer is it's the preference of the lifter and what they want to accomplish. But I also think solely doing one style of deadlifting will not help increase your deadlift. Rotating conventional and sumo into your training along with how you utilize them as far as deficit pulls, pin pulls, block pulls, speed pulls, against bands or chains, will help build your deadlift. That method hasn't really changed for me now that I'm training for strongman, rotating my lifts and style of lifting is something I do for powerlifting as well. The only difference is having higher volume days on the main lifts to prep for how competition will feel like. So after doing a max lift, I'll deload to a certain percentage, ranging from 50-80 percent, for either time, volume, or until failure, so I can maintain the combination of strength and endurance -- so none of that "I can't count past 5."
Todays training:
Sumo pulls - 315lbs x 6 x 3
Deloaded to 225lbs x 2 x 10
RDL's with the regular barbell - 4 x 10
Hyper - 4 x 15 with a 2 second hold. Really focusing on squeezing my glutes.
Low sled pulls - 3 x 100 ft.
Band hamstring curls x 100
