Fructose is a sugar that originates from fruits. High fructose corn syrup is a manufactured version of fructose and is one of the most commonly consumed versions of fructose.

Science Daily explains to us how it may have a negative effect down the road on your heart.

"The liver converts fructose very efficiently into fat. People who consume too much high-fructose food can in time become overweight and develop high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia with fatty liver and insulin resistance -- symptoms that doctors group together under the name metabolic syndrome."

Excessive fructose consumption in addition to an over worked heart and create a enzyme related loop that could lead to a hypertrophied heart and eventually failure.

There are certain enzymes (KHK-C/A) that become more available in the heart when exogenous and chronic load is placed on it. This puts the heart in a more glycolytic state, this in conjunction with the fructose related enzymes readily available creates a perfect storm for heart failure. Furthermore there is a gene (SF3B1) that can be activated and is correlated to cancerous like growth.

Now this does not mean that fructose will directly kill you. Many of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome can be combated with good nutrition and exercise. To avoid these potential issues make sure you are consuming your fructose natural fruit sources so you can take advantage of the micronutrients they supply. It also wouldn't be a bad idea for you to limit your intake of high fructose corn syrup and to increase your weekly physical activity.
